Aurelia E. Brazeal
Ambassador, Ethiopia
Term of Appointment: 11/07/2002 to 10/03/2005

Aurelia E. Brazeal was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia on November 7, 2002.

She was the first Dean of the Department of Stateís Leadership and Management School from 1999 to 2002 and Dean of the Departmentís Senior Seminar from 1998. Ambassador Brazeal served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific from 1996 to 1998. Prior to that assignment she was the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya from 1993 to 1996. She was the first U.S. Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia from 1990 to 1993. Prior to that appointment she was Minister-Counselor for Economics at the U.S. Embassy in Japan.

Additional assignments included a tour in Argentina; in the Economic Bureau; in the Operations Center; in the Secretariat; as Desk Officer for Paraguay and Uruguay; in detail to Treasury; as Trade Officer in Tokyo; as Economic/Financial Officer in the Economic Bureau, Office of Development Finance; and first Deputy Director for Economics in the Japan office.

Ambassador Brazeal is from Atlanta, Georgia and received a B.A. from Spelman College and, in 2000, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate. She received an M.I.A. from Columbia University and did post-graduate study at the John F. Kennedy School at Harvard. She has received Superior Honor Awards, Performance Pay, and Presidential Performance Awards. She was invited to join the Council on Foreign Relations in 2001.
