Karl Hofmann
Special Assistant, Office of the Secretary
Term of Appointment: 12/19/2002 to present

Karl Hofmann assumed his duties as Special Assistant to the Secretary and Executive Secretary of the Department of State on December 19, 2002.  Prior to that, he was Ambassador to the Republic of Togo from September 29, 2000 to December 14, 2002.

Ambassador Hofmann is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service and has been posted in Lesotho, Morocco, Rwanda, and Jamaica.  He has held a variety of positions at the Department of State, and has worked at the National Security Council at the White House.

Ambassador Hofmann is a recipient of the Department's Superior Honor Award and Meritorious Honor Award.

Ambassador Hofmann has degrees from Georgetown University and the National War College.  He speaks French, Spanish, and German.  He was born in California and makes his home in Maryland.
