Michael J. Senko
Ambassador, Republic of Marshall Islands
Term of Appointment: 01/10/2001 to 08/02/2003

Michael J. Senko was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Kiribati on January 10, 2001. He was nominated by President William Jefferson Clinton on February 10, 2000 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 15, 2000.

Ambassador Senko is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. He entered the Foreign Service in 1977 and served in a variety of consular, administrative, political and management positions in the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, El Salvador, Mongolia, Belize, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Washington. He also served in the Marshall Islands, where he opened the U.S. Status Liaison Office in 1984. He assisted during that time in ending the U.S. Trusteeship of the Pacific Islands. Ambassador Senko last served as Policy Planning Director in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

Ambassador Senko has received five Department of State Superior Honor Awards and several other group and Meritorious Honor Awards.

Ambassador Senko was born on November 8, 1950 in Washington, D.C., where he still resides. A Vietnam veteran, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1969-72, and was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He holds bachelorís degrees in political science and business administration from Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan (1975).  Ambassador Senko is married and has two daughters.
