Charles Shapiro
Ambassador, Venezuela
Term of Appointment: 02/25/2002 to 08/31/2007

Charles Shapiro was sworn in as Ambassador to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on February 25, 2002. Ambassador Shapiro is a 24-year veteran of the Foreign Service with wide experience in Latin American and the Caribbean. Abroad he has served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Santiago, Chile (1995-1998); Deputy Chief of Mission in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago (1991-1994); Political Counselor in San Salvador, El Salvador (1985-1988); and Political Officer in Copenhagen, Denmark (1979-1981). Ambassador Shapiro's Washington assignments include Coordinator for Cuban Affairs (1999-2001), Executive Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs (1994-1995), Division Chief for South America in the Bureau of International Narcotics Matters (1990-1991), Deputy Director in the Office of Andean Affairs (1988-1990), and Desk Officer for El Salvador (1983-1985).

Ambassador Shapiro holds the rank of Minister Counselor in the Senior Foreign Service. He is the recipient of the Department of State Superior Honor Award (1990) and a Presidential Meritorious Service Award (2001) and was selected for the Department of State's 41st Senior Seminar (1999).

Ambassador. Shapiro is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. Ambassador Shapiro is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (B.A., 1971) and Georgia State University (M.Ed., 1977). He served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve (1971-1977). His foreign languages are Spanish and Danish.
