Remarks at Award for Corporate Excellence

Ronald Weiser, U.S. Ambassador to the Slovak Republic
Via Interactive Satellite Broadcast
Washington, DC
October 15, 2003

(As prepared)

Secretary Powell, Prime Minister Dzurinda, ladies and gentleman: U.S. Steel’s success in Slovakia is about the company’s contribution to its employees, the community, and to the entire country. When U.S. Steel purchased the facility in 2000, it transformed an unprofitable state-owned relic into a world-class operation, setting an example for Slovaks as they continue with their economic and political transformation. They have shown that capitalism is not only about profits, but also about social responsibility, generosity, and community development.

U.S. Steel instilled a nationally publicized program of business and personal ethics for its employees and suppliers soon after assuming control. This brought the idea of corporate and personal responsibility into the homes of millions of ordinary Slovaks.

U.S. Steel did far more than just providing jobs. It increased salaries and improved healthcare and social benefits. Management gave workers a voice in operating the company through regular meetings. Safety regulations were tightened, environmental protection efforts were expanded, opportunities for advancement were increased, and a profit sharing plan was introduced.

U.S. Steel’s generosity was also expressed to the entire community. They helped build and repair hospitals, schools, and orphanages; purchased medical and school equipment; and facilitated adoptions. In addition, they brighten the lives of the citizens through contributions to cultural and athletic events and numerous other recreational activities. Their Economic Development Center has helped attract other foreign companies to eastern Slovakia, which in turn has created hundreds of new jobs.

We congratulate U.S. Steel today for its excellence in corporate citizenship. Their leadership and employees have done a remarkable job as trailblazers in responsible corporate and community activism. This has enhanced the perception of America and Americans and helped strengthen the relationship between our two great nations. Each man and woman of U.S. Steel should be proud of their role in winning this award.
