Statement on Global Internet Freedom Task ForceJosette Sheeran Shiner, Under Secretary for Economic, Business and Agricultural AffairsRemarks following the first meeting of the Task Force Washington, DC February 24, 2006 On Friday the US Department of State’s Global Internet Freedom Task Force (GIFT) held its first meeting to discuss ways to maximize access to information over the Internet and minimize the success of repressive regimes in using Internet technology to censor debate and silence dissidents. In its first meeting, the task force identified the range of issues it will examine and took stock of the diplomatic tools and actions available to promote Internet freedom. We want to act on the basis of the best available ideas inside and outside of the government. Over the next month, we will seek the latest information from Internet companies, nongovernmental organizations, and Internet experts. We will also consult with the interagency community and Members of Congress to determine the most effective ways forward. The Global Internet Freedom Task Force will meet again next month, March 2006
