DRL sponsors 18 democracy, human rights, and labor programs in Africa. Current funding for DRL programs in Africa exceeds $12 million. Program topics include impartial trial monitoring, political and election journalism, and combating corruption.
One program has a regional focus. This program builds the capacity of non-elite Muslim women to advocate for basic needs in their communities. The implementer works with women and men from approximately six Muslim civic groups in Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia and Liberia. Program activities include outreach to local partners in each country; advocacy needs assessment with each partner civic group; advocacy-training workshops in each country; monthly technical assistance meetings; regional workshops in which Nigerian, Liberian, Sudanese and Somali civic advocates provide peer mentoring and networking; and the implementation of the groups' action plans and sub-grants to individual Muslim civic groups.
