U.S.-Italy Bilateral Climate Change Partnership

On July 19, 2001, President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi pledged that the United States and Italy would pursue joint research programs on climate change and low-emission technology development. This ongoing partnership has resulted in regular meetings between the two countries to discuss ongoing and future collaboration on carbon cycle research; global and regional climate modeling; low carbon emission technologies development; and hydrogen fuel cell technologies.

Most Recent Meeting:

On Monday June 18th, 2007 the Department of State hosted the 5th U.S.–Italy bilateral meeting on climate change. Major topics of discussion included clean technologies, renewable energy, and climate impacts and adaptation. Approximately 90 people attended the meeting, including representatives from the U.S. and Italian governments, as well as academics and private sector representatives from both countries.
