Department of State Wins SBA Gold Star Award

Washington, DC
September 18, 2003

Yesterday evening, Secretary Powell received the U.S. Small Business Administrationís 2003 Gold Star Award on behalf of the Bureau of Administrationís Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization. The award was conferred during a celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the Small Business Administration.

This prestigious award acknowledges outstanding efforts in achieving SBAís aggressive goals for promoting the role of small businesses in the Federal marketplace. While the government-wide statutory minimum goal for awarding contracts to small businesses in general was 23%, the Department of State achieved 47% - nearly half of the contract dollars spent by our domestic acquisition offices.
