David G. Carpenter
Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Diplomatic Security and Director, Office of Foreign Missions
Term of Appointment: 08/11/1998 to 06/28/2002

Mr. Carpenter was sworn in as Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security and Director of the Office of Foreign Missions on August 11, 1998. He is a 26-year veteran of the United States Secret Service. He retired from the Secret Service in January of 1998 as Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Office. Mr. Carpenter was previously the Deputy Assistant Director of the Office of Protective Operations, which followed his assignment as the Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protective Division.

Mr. Carpenter's other assignments include tours of duty in Phoenix, Arizona, and Los Angeles, California, as well as permanent assignments to protective details with Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter and Bush.

In addition, Mr. Carpenter served as the Special Agent in Charge of numerous Secret Service details assigned to kings, queens, and foreign heads of state.

A native of Denver, Colorado, he received a BA in Personnel Management from Oklahoma State University. He is married and has a son.
