Michael Klosson
Consul General, Hong Kong

Mr. Klosson previously served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs, 1996 - 1999. He had responsibility for regional political issues, such as Kosovo, Bosnia, China, North Korea, and Haiti, as well as a range of economic and management issues.

Mr. Klosson’s Foreign Service career includes assignments involving both European and Asian affairs. From 1975-81, he served as staff assistant in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs; at the then U.S. Embassy in Taipei, Taiwan; and in the Department’s Office of Japanese Affairs. From 1981-83, Mr. Klosson served as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of State, working both for Secretary Haig and Secretary Shultz. Mr. Klosson was then selected as a Pearson Fellow and was detailed to the United States Senate for nine months.

He returned to the Department in 1984 to become Deputy Director of the Office of European Security and Political Affairs. In 1978, Mr. Klosson was appointed Director of the Secretariat Staff in the Office of the Secretary of State where he served until 1990. From 1990-93, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’Affaires for 10 months at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. From 1993-96, he served as Charge d’Affaires for 10 months at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. From 1993-96, he served as Charge d’Affaires and then Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in the Hague, the Netherlands.

Mr. Klosson was born August 22, 1949 in Washington, D.C. A member or the Phi Beta Kappa Society, he graduated magna cum laude from Hamilton College (B.A. 1971) and Princeton University (M.P.A. 1974 and M.A. 1975). He was awarded a Herbert H. Lehman Fellowship, a Winston Churchill Fellowship and six Department of State Superior Honor awards.
