George A. Krol
Ambassador, Belarus
Term of Appointment: 08/13/2003 to 07/24/2006

George Albert Krol was sworn in as Ambassador to Belarus on August 13, 2003.

Ambassador George Albert Krol is a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service. He joined the Foreign Service in 1982 and has held foreign assignments in Poland, India, the Soviet Union, Russia, Ukraine and also previously in Belarus. He most recently served as Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs at the United States Embassy in Moscow (1999-2002). He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’Affaires in Minsk, Belarus (1993-1995) His Washington assignments include Director of the Office of Russian Affairs (1997-1999) and Special Assistant to the Ambassador-at-Large for the New Independent States (1995-1997). Ambassador Krol has received several State Department Superior and Meritorious Honor awards. He speaks Russian and Polish.

Ambassador Krol’s home state is New Jersey. He attended St. Peter’s Preparatory School in Jersey City, New Jersey, and received a Bachelor’s degree in History, magna cum laude, from Harvard University and Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University, England.

His interests include history, hiking, and occasional horseback riding.
