Third Global Forum on Fighting Corruption and Safeguarding Integrity

At the Third Global Forum on Fighting Corruption held on May 29-31, in Seoul, senior officials from 123 countries came together to find common approaches to effectively prevent and combat corruption. These nations called for continued national commitments and actions toward transparency in government and budgetary processes, implementation of good governance practices, the promotion of integrity and ethics, and enforcement of anticorruption measures. Secretary of Commerce, Donald Evans, led the U.S. delegation and in his remarks underscored the United States Government's strong support for fighting corruption and that it remains the shared responsibility of governments, the private sector, and civil society. Governments must adopt and enforce effective anticorruption laws. Corporations must establish awareness and compliance programs and their officers must be responsible corporate stewards. Civil society and the media must act through vigilance in exposing corruption to the sunshine of public scrutiny. In his televised remarks to Global Forum III delegates, President Bush applauded participants for fighting tyranny and corruption and for promoting honest, accountable, and transparent government.
