Explanation of Position on the Agreed Conclusions: Enhanced Participation of Women in Development

Patricia Brister, U.S. Representative to the 50th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women
Remarks to the General Assembly
New York City
March 10, 2006

Mr. Chairman, I would like to draw your attention to the Explanation of Position I have already given regarding reproductive health.

These agreed conclusions call upon states to promote equal pay for equal work or work of equal value. The United States accepts "equal pay for equal work" but has concerns about "work of equal value." There are no internationally agreed upon criteria to decide whether a particular form of work is of "equal value" to another. Thank you.
