Miriam (“Mimi”) Hughes, a member of the Senior Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State, became the seventh U.S. Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia on August 2, 2007.
Ambassador Hughes, who holds the rank of Minister Counselor, has built a diplomatic career spanning more than 30 years in a variety of consular, policy and management positions. She previously served as Deputy United States Representative to the Economic and Social Council at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. From 2005-2007 at the UN, she led a section handling a wide range of multilateral negotiations on economic, social and human rights issues. Her team advocated for sustainable development, good governance and fundamental rights.
Prior to the UN, Ambassador Hughes served in the State Department’s Bureau of International Organization Affairs as Director of the Office of Policy, Public and Congressional Affairs. Earlier in her career, she served as Consul General in Mexico City and Principal Officer of the U.S. Consulate General in Thessaloniki, Greece. Other diplomatic assignments include Santo Domingo, Quito, Bangkok and London. In Thailand, she monitored and reported on conditions in UN refugee camps for Cambodians and Vietnamese. In Greece, she promoted U.S. business opportunities and analyzed emerging developments in the Balkans.
Ambassador Hughes was born in New York City and received a BA degree in government from Barnard College. She speaks Spanish and Greek. Before joining the Foreign Service, Ambassador Hughes worked for United Press International. She is the mother of one daughter and is also a grandmother.
