University of Utah
June 27, 2008

On June 27th, Governor Jon Huntsman and Dean Hiram Chodosh hosted a roundtable discussion and luncheon to celebrate the completion of the first U.S. based training program sponsored by the Public Private Partnership for Justice Reform in Afghanistan. This three week training covered issues such as: a comparison of the Afghan and the U.S. legal systems; human rights under international and Afghan law; the role of the media in the justice sector; the corrections system; as well as crime scene investigation, evidence collection and witness protection. During the Reception, the sixteen Afghan prosecutors in the program were presented certificates from the University of Utah acknowledging their completion of the program and had the opportunity to meet Governor Jon Huntsman, who spoke at length about his previous involvement with Afghanistan, his support for this and other efforts to develop the Human Capacity of the justice sector in Afghanistan, as well as the leading role that the University of Utah has played in advancing the development of training programs around the world through the Global Justice Initiative. The Public Private Partnership is planning to follow up on this effort with a training program for Women Judges in early 2009.
