Caspian Pipelines: Georgia and Azerbaijan Gas Deal

The United States welcomes the agreement signed between Georgia and Azerbaijan on September 29 to allow construction of a gas pipeline from Azerbaijan through Georgia to Turkey. The U.S. applauds the strategic vision of President Shevardnadze of Georgia and President Aliyev of Azerbaijan that made this deal possible. It is also a tribute to the vision and hard work of the companies involved.

We will continue our full support to these nations for the development of multiple, commercially sustainable oil and gas pipelines in an East-West energy corridor so that Caspian energy resources will efficiently reach world markets.
