QUESTION TAKEN AT OCTOBER 5, 2001 DAILY PRESS BRIEFING

Iran: NCR Office in Washington (Taken Question)

Question: Is the terrorist group Mujahedin e-Khalq (MEK), alias People's Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI), alias National Council of Resistance (NCR), permitted to have an office in Washington?

Answer: The Secretary of State designated the MEK (and its numerous aliases) a foreign terrorist organization because of its long record of terrorist attacks. As a result of that designation, it is illegal for U.S. citizens to provide material support to the group.

The National Council of Resistance (NCR), which is an alias of the MEK, maintains an office in Washington. Questions about its legal status should be referred to the Department of Justice.
