Secretary Powell Meets with Uzbek Foreign Minister Kamilov

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell met this afternoon with Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov on the new positive relationship between the U.S. and Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan has been a key coalition partner since the early days of the war against terrorism. The two sides discussed the war against terrorism and the prospects for the future of Afghanistan. They also discussed the new situation in Central Asia that will arise from our successful prosecution of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Secretary Powell expressed his strong appreciation for the contributions of the people and government of Uzbekistan to Operation Enduring Freedom. Both sides noted their commitment to fostering a long-term relationship between the U.S. and Uzbekistan. As a part of that long-term relationship, the U.S. is developing a significantly increased package including humanitarian assistance, security, water management, health care, and social services.
