The 2002 Secretary of State Awards for Corporate Excellence

On October 1, 2002, Secretary of State Colin Powell presented the Secretary of State's2002 Awards for Corporate Excellence at a ceremony held in the Department's Dean Acheson Auditorium. The Secretary recognized two U.S. firms for their outstanding corporate citizenship, innovation, and exemplary international business practices and for exhibiting the qualities of conscience, character and integrity. The Awards, which were established in 1999, demonstrate how American firms can do well by doing good in the global marketplace.

The recipients of this year's Secretary of State Awards for Corporate Excellence are The Coca-Cola Company of Atlanta, Georgia, and its subsidiary Coca-Cola Egypt, and Chindex of Bethesda, Maryland, and its subsidiaries in China.

Chindex International, an exporter of U.S. medical equipment and services, received the Secretary of State's Award for Corporate Excellence for its work in delivering healthcare products and services in China. At no cost, Chindex staff from the company's United Family Hospital and Clinics in Beijing performs operations - and assist the work of mercy missions from international NGOs - that transform the lives of Chinese orphans. Chindex has been at the forefront of promoting exchanges between the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the FDA's Chinese counterparts and helping Chinese professionals learn about new trends in public health and medical education in the U.S.

Coca-Cola Egypt received the Secretary of State's Award for Corporate Excellence for its educational, environmental, cultural, health and poverty alleviation programs in Egypt. Coca-Cola is a major sponsor of Future Generations Foundation, an Egyptian NGO that trains recent graduates in business and computer literacy skills; has established wastewater and air treatment operations in its plants throughout Egypt; contributed to and sponsored a campaign to raise money for a children's cancer hospital; and has been a sponsor of an Egyptian Red Crescent program to provide better housing for 4,000 families in a poor district of Cairo.
