Martin Redrado, Deputy Foreign Minister of Argentina, Meets Senior State Department Officials

Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage met today with Argentina’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Martin Redrado. United States Ambassador to Argentina James Walsh and Argentina’s Ambassador to the United States, Diego Guelar, were present at the meeting. Mr. Redrado and Ambassador Guelar met separately with Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs, Alan Larson.

Deputy Secretary Armitage expressed his sincere appreciation for Argentina’s open and collegial approach to cooperation between our two countries.

The two deputy ministers discussed the full range of bilateral issues that affect relations between the United States and this key Western Hemisphere partner, which is our only major non-NATO ally in the Western Hemisphere. Deputy Secretary Armitage and Under Secretary Larson reiterated our support for Argentina as it develops a sustainable economic plan, while reaffirming our confidence that the country will overcome its economic difficulties and resume economic growth.

While taking note of our close bilateral relationship, Deputy Secretary Armitage and his Argentine counterpart discussed many important issues that affect our common interests, including negotiations on a hemispheric-wide free trade area; regional security; counter-terrorism; and our common understanding of Iraq’s continued defiance of United Nations resolutions.

Under Secretary of State Larson’s meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Redrado focused on macroeconomic as well as regional and bilateral trade issues, including the General System of Preferences, and on the progress of Argentina’s open negotiations with the International Monetary Fund.
