Washington, DC

Question Taken at February 20, 2002 Daily Press Briefing

Designation of Ansar al-Islam

Question:   Are you going to include Ansar al-Islam on the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations ?

Answer:    We have placed Ansar al-Islam on the Executive Order 13224 list. This action imposes strong penalties on those who provide financial support to terrorist organizations, blocking the assets of designated organizations such as Ansar al-Islam and individuals linked to global terrorism. The Department has not designated this group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. The standards of evidence are different for placing a group on the Foreign Terrorist Organization list than they are for designating a group under Executive Order 13224.

For more specific information, please refer to Patterns of Global Terrorism available on the Department of State website at http://www.state.gov/s/ct/rls/.
