Department of State Commemorates Earth Day

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall will be the featured speakers at a special program of the Secretary's Open Forum series scheduled on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22. The program, "Deforestation: Consequences & Challenges," will take place from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. in the Dean Acheson Auditorium of the Department of State. The event is open for press coverage.

The program will include a panel discussion with representatives of non-governmental organizations and the private sector moderated by John Turner, Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs. Panelists include Bruce Cabarle of the World Wildlife Fund, Steve Cox of the World Resources Institute, Tim Jessup of The Nature Conservancy, and Ron Jarvis of Home Depot.

The Earth Day program is on-the-record and open for on-camera coverage. Media representatives are requested to use the 23rd Street entrance of the Department for access to this event and must present one of the following press credentials: (1) a U.S. government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver's license or passport).
