Armitage-Aliyev Phone Call (Taken Question)

Question:   Could you give us a readout of Deputy Secretary Armitage's call to Azerbaijan's President-elect? Was he calling to offer congratulations?

Answer:   The Deputy Secretary phoned Ilham Aliyev Friday on October 17. He noted the Prime Ministerís strong performance at the polls and reiterated our desire to work closely with him and with Azerbaijan in the future. Mr. Armitage underscored the need to avoid further violence and ensure that final election results are tabulated fairly. He emphasized that it is critical for all sides to show maximum restraint.
