Additional Funding for African Union Forces in Sudan

Question:   Is the Department requesting additional funding from Congress for funds for the African Union forces in Sudan?

Answer:   Our priority in Darfur is transitioning, on an urgent basis, the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) to a larger, more robust United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operation as mandated in UNSCR 1706 (2006). The African Unionís mandate ends September 30, 2006. The Presidentís FY 2007 budget requests funding that would contribute to the assessed costs of a UN mission in Darfur. If additional funds are required, we will consult early and often with Congress.
