State Department to Announce New Phase of Global Internet Freedom Strategy

On December 20, 2006, Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky will announce the next phase in the State Department's Global Internet Freedom Task Force (GIFT) strategy to promote freedom of expression and the free flow of information on the Internet at a ceremony in the State Department's Treaty Room.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced the establishment of GIFT on February 14, 2006 as an internal State Department coordination group to address challenges to freedom of expression and the free flow of information on the Internet. Since its launch, the Task Force has developed a robust and effective global strategy to monitor and respond to threats to Internet freedom. At the same time, the GIFT is advancing the frontiers of Internet freedom by seeking to expand access to the Internet around the world. In implementing this strategy, the State Department will coordinate with other U.S. government agencies, as well as with the National Security Council and the National Economic Council.
