AU/UN Political Effort in Darfur

The United States welcomes the recent establishment of the Joint Mediation Support Team by the United Nations and the African Union to advance the political process in Darfur, including engagement with Darfur Peace Agreement non-signatories. We support the efforts of United Nations Special Envoy Jan Eliason and African Union Special Envoy Salim Salim to gain broader acceptance of the Darfur Peace Agreement.

The African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN) were charged with coordinating the political process in Darfur by the Addis Ababa and Abuja agreements of November 2006. AU and UN staff members plan to travel to Chad on March 1 to meet with the Justice and Equality Movement, the National Redemption Front, the G-19, and the Sudan Federal Democratic Alliance to urge these groups to join a peaceful political process to resolve the crisis in Darfur.
