International Maritime Operations

Question: Please provide details on the U.S. Navy coming to the aid of a North Korean ship off the coast of Somalia.

Answer: According to a U.S. Naval Forces Central Command press release (http://www.cusnc.navy.mil/articles/2007/225.html), the USS James E. Williams responded to a distress call to the International Maritime Bureau on October 30th from the North Korean cargo vessel Dai Hong Dan. The DPRK crew regained control of the ship after it was initially taken by assailants off the coast of Somalia, and the USS Williams provided medical assistance to injured North Korean crew members. The assailants remain aboard the Dai Hong Dan.

We refer you to the Department of Defense for further details.
