  • Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on May 15, 1937;
  • Emigrated to the United States in 1948; awarded a B.A. in Political Science from Wellesley College in 1959;
  • Received a Master’s degree from Columbia University in 1968;
  • Awarded a Ph.D. from Columbia University’s Department of Public Law and Government in 1976;
  • Chief Legislative Assistant to Senator Edmund Muskie, 1976-1978;
  • Staff member on National Security Council, 1978-1981;
  • Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, 1981-1982;
  • Research professor of international affairs and director of Women in Foreign Service program at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, 1982-1993;
  • President of Center for National Policy, a non-profit public policy organization based in Washington, DC, 1989-1992;
  • United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations, 1993-1997;
  • Sworn in as the 64th Secretary of State on January 23, 1997, becoming the first female to hold the position. Served until January 19, 2001
