Groundhog Shadow Day

Washington, DC
January 31, 2003

The 2003 National Job Shadow Day kicked off on January 31, with more than 100,000 businesses and about 1 million students participating in the program.  This annual initiative provides students with the opportunity to "shadow" a workplace mentor. The State Department this year hosted 160 middle and high school students from 27 schools in DC, Maryland, and Virginia, one of whom--Constance Banks, pictured above--shadowed Secretary Powell.  The day-long program included an introductory session, a 3-hour “shadow” period, lunch, a closing session with the Secretary, and finally a tour of the Department’s Diplomatic Reception Rooms.

National Job Shadowing is a coordinated effort of the National Job Shadow Coalition, which includes America's Promise, of which Secretary Powell is Founding Chairman; Junior Achievement; the U.S. Department of Labor; and the U.S. Department of Education.
