Presidents Bush and Mbeki meet at the Union House in Pretoria, South Africa, Wednesday, July 9, 2003. “Your nation's recent history is a great story of courage and persistence in the pursuit of justice,” said President Bush to President Mbeki, during the press conference after their meeting. “This is a country that threw off oppression and is now the force of freedom and stability, and a force for progress throughout the continent of Africa.” White House photo by Paul Morse.President Bush and Secretary Powell traveled in Africa July 7-12, 2003 to continue to build America's relationship with the continent. This visit highlighted the Bush Administration's commitment to working toward a free, prosperous, and peaceful Africa. The President and Secretary visited Senegal, South Africa, Botswana, Uganda, and Nigeria.
