During her trip to Brazil, Secretary Rice met with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.Secretary Rice traveled to Latin America, April 25-30, 2005. During this time, she visited Brazil, Colombia, Chile and El Salvador. The Secretary highlighted support for democracy, free trade and sustainable development in the region and beyond. As we support democracy with our Latin American partners in the hemisphere and beyond, we all recognize the need for democracy to deliver the opportunity, safety and freedom that people deserve. Within this context, the Secretary discussed how to enhance our cooperation on such issues as drug trafficking and crime, poverty reduction, education and environmental protection. On her visit to Chile, she headed the U.S. delegation to the Community of Democracies Ministerial Meeting.
