Biography: Patricia A. McNerney

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary with Delegated Authority for Management of the ISN Bureau
Bureau of  International Security and Nonproliferation

Patricia A. McNerneyPatricia A. McNerney is the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation (ISN). She was delegated the authority to carry out the responsibilities of the Assistant Secretary in September 2007.

Ms. McNerney manages the more than 200 personnel in the ISN bureau and its 14 offices to ensure that the bureau meets its mission of preventing the spread of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, their related materials, and means of delivery. Key priorities include diplomatic efforts to: address proliferation challenges posed by Iran, North Korea and other states of proliferation concern; counter proliferation activities by states of proliferation concern and terrorists through interdictions, financial measures, and other cooperative efforts; negotiate and implement multilateral treaties and initiatives and assistance programs; negotiate and implement agreements that support civil nuclear programs consistent with nonproliferation principles.

Previously, she served as the senior advisor to the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs as his principle advisor on counterproliferation efforts. Prior to coming to the Department of State, she served as the Republican Staff Director for the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, the General Counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and the Chief Counsel to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

Ms. McNerney is a member of the Virginia Bar. She received her J.D. from Washington and Lee School of Law in Lexington, Virginia, and her B.A. from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
